The Chipstone Foundation and the Milwaukee Art Museum will co-host "Ho-Chunk Objects: Souvenirs of Bennett’s Wisconsin Dells," a Mrs. M. ———— 's Cabinet Salon with special guest Kendra Greendeer.

Kendra Greendeer, Collections Manager at the Little Eagle Arts Foundation and UW-Madison PhD Student, will be in conversation with Chipstone Curator and Director of Research Dr. Sarah Carter to explore nineteenth-century photographer H. H. Bennett's relationship to Ho-Chunk communities of the Wisconsin Dells region. The discussion will focus on Ho-Chunk objects installed in Mrs. M. ———— 's Cabinet from the Little Eagle Arts Foundation in conjunction with the current photography exhibit Photographing Nature’s Cathedrals: Carleton E. Watkins, Eadweard Muybridge, and H. H. Bennett.

Join us to explore the role of photography in boosting nature tourism in nineteenth-century America with Milwaukee Art Museum Assistant Curator of Photography Ariel Pate. The event will begin with visitors experiencing H. H. Bennett's stereoviews of the Wisconsin Dells in the lavish nineteenth-century interior of Mrs. M. ———— 's Cabinet, and will conclude with a tour of the exhibit Photographing Nature’s Cathedrals: Carleton E. Watkins, Eadweard Muybridge, and H. H. Bennett.

Watch and listen as a fully functional one-hundred-year-old wax cylinder records the sweet sounds of the late nineteenth century, and a Victrola cone plays back the exceptional event.

The team behind Mrs. M. ———— 's Cabinet presents a gallery talk, open to the public with Museum admition.

In this talk, Dr. Sarah Beetham will peel back the layers of meaning that activate objects with historical significance. From a Revolutionary War soldier monument steeped in Civil War memory to a tintype photograph shot in 2013 with a camera that once captured the image of Jefferson Davis, she will explore significant things that seem to exist in more than one era, confounding viewers with their time traveling powers. With a sensibility that is one part scholarly, one part steampunk, Dr. Beetham will probe the often fluid and sometimes frustrating relationship between stuff and time.

Mrs. M. ———— ’s able assistants, graduate students in Art History and Museum Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, have been working with Mrs. M. ————  to research seven new objects to add to her cabinet. Come view these fascinating ceramics in contexts that transform their meanings and make Mrs. M. ———— ’s particular worldview apparent.

On Tuesday, March 1st, Jon Prown and Sarah Carter of the Chipstone Foundation will join artist Beth Lipman to discuss her new work Secretary with Chipmunk as well as Mrs. M. ———— 's Cabinet.
