In 1876 I visited the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. It seemed that early America was presented as more of a “new England” than the cosmopolitan world I have always known it to be. I decided to start collecting diverse ceramics and other unusual things to present my version of American history, a history that I find to be truer. Even within the English colonies, wares from around the world filled homes with bright colors and stories of faraway places.
